History

Established: 1821; closed in 2005

This beautiful building is located next door to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet overlooking the Mississippi River. The current building is the fourth church at that location; the first was a log cabin built c. 1818, although the congregation of mostly French settlers did not formalize until a few years later. The present church looks very old, but its cornerstone was actually laid by Archbishop John Glennon in September 1940.

Sts. Mary and Joseph was the third Catholic church founded in St. Louis, almost sixty years after the Old Cathedral in today’s downtown and almost forty years after St. Ferdinand in Florissant. The church was in its own community, which was the town of Carondelet, south of the City of St. Louis. This remained an open and active parish until 2005 when it merged with St. Stephen, Protomartyr, but remained open as a chapel. It closed, however, in October 2021.
