Learning About Lineage Societies     Instructor: Judy Belford

Class Info: Membership in a lineage society is often a research objective for many people. There are a number of such societies in the St. Louis area that stem from the Mayflower, American Revolution, and Civil War. Learn about finding necessary documentation to apply for membership.

Foundations of Genealogy, Part I     Instructor: Ilene Murray

Class Info.: Whether you are just beginning or you have been working on your family history for years, sometimes you just need to rethink your strategies. We’ll look at some ways to get organized and stay that way, review basic rules of genealogy, look at the importance of citing sources, and see how timelines can help guide your research.

Class Info.: This class is a repeat (with a few additions) of one offered in February. If you are planning on attending our Salt Lake City research trip, the class will help you be prepared. The FamilySearch website is much more than just a place to search for ancestors. Learn about the FamilySearch wiki, how to navigate the catalog, how to access digitized books, and many more features included in this comprehensive website. Since microfilm loans will no longer be available, learn how to maximize familysearch.org. Please know your login ID and password for familysearch.org. If you do not have one, you can create a login at the beginning of the class. Personal laptops are welcome.

Class Info.: (This class follows the first session, and you are encouraged to sign up for both.) Most genealogists begin with census research, but then what? We’ll look more closely at how to analyze those census records, how to get the most from vital records, and repositories and Internet sites that can help you find what you need to do better research.

Class Info.: If you only research online, you will hit a brick wall sooner than later. The only way to break through may be a trip to a library, courthouse, cemetery, or other repositories. Learn about how to find records off the Internet.

Beginning RootsMagic   Instructor: Ted Steele

Date: 4 November 2017  Day: Saturday  Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Sessions: 1

Class Info.: Learn to create a RootsMagic database, add ancestors with sources and notes, and enter places consistently. Explore the various “data views” and see how to generate reports. (Bring family data on a jump drive or your own laptop for hands-on.)
