Citations—City Directory Records
City and county directories were published in St. Louis as early as 1821. Depending on the year searched, they may contain more information for the city and individual. Some include historical information about the city and maps. Looking at the title of the directory should help understand everything covered in the book. As an example, Gould’s St. Louis (Missouri) Directory for 1930: Containing an Alphabetical Directory of Business Concerns and Private Citizens, a Directory of Householders, Occupants of Office Buildings and Business Places, Including a Complete Street and Avenue Guide and Much Information of a Miscellaneous Character; Also, a “Buyers’ Guide” and a Complete Classified Business Directory, obviously contains a great deal of information about businesses, street names, street locations, and a business directory by type of occupation. The directories list individuals with addresses. Later directories include occupation and sometimes the wife or widow’s name.
Elements of a citation of a city directory could include: the name of the editor or compiler, the title of the directory, the city and state of publication, the name of the publisher, year of publication, page number, URL, and date accessed.
