The 1805 St. Louis tax list compiled by City Clerk, Thomas F. Riddick, was reportedly the first known list of residents taken after the Louisiana Purchase. The index includes the taxpayer’s name, number of young men, slaves, horses, and cattle. The original spelling was used in the index and may vary from the familiar style.

To locate your ancestors, use this index in conjunction with the 1805 Census included in this website.

Missouri Historical Society owns the original document. Then director, Mr. John Lindenbusch, and then archivist, Mrs. Ernst Stadler, contributed this data for publication in the 1976 St. Louis Genealogical Society Quarterly, volume 9, number 2, pages 49–50.
