Merchants Exchange Members’ Deaths, 1875-1910
The Merchants Exchange in St. Louis was the hub of the area’s business, especially the active and expansive Midwest grain market. Founded after the Civil War, the group’s purpose was to “advance the commercial character, and promote the manufacturing interest of the City of St. Louis.” They also hoped to “acquire, preserve, and disseminate valuable business information . . .” A book with annual statements of the Trade and Commerce of St. Louis contains a list that provides the names of members of the Merchants Exchange who died between 1875 and 1910. The book from which this list was taken is available at the Missouri Historical Society.
Associate archivist Dennis Northcott contributed this information for publication in the 1999 St. Louis Genealogical Society Quarterly, volume 32, number 2, pages 51–56; number 3, pages 101–106.
