St. Louis Public Library has an index of deaths listed in individual obituaries or in the “Deaths of the Week” column (similar to burial permits) in the St. Louis Argus, an African-American newspaper. This index starts in 1915. The finding aid, in book form, is available at the Central Library.

Currently the index includes information up to 1926, plus the war years of 1942–1945. Additional years will be added.

This newspaper is available on microfilm at local libraries and it is also available online. Scanned images of the Argus from 1915 through 1926 are at https://archive.org/details/stlouisargus/.
