Rose A. (Pickup) Heine, 1871–1958
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 16 October 1871, Rose A. Pickup was the daughter of James W. Pickup and Catherine “Kate” (Parker) Pickup. Kate had immigrated from Liverpool, England on 17 September 1842 at the young age of four months, arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 11 November 1842 on the ship Sidney. She traveled with her stepfather, Richard Garstang, her mother Sarah (Nikloff), five of Richard’s children from his first marriage, and her sister Rosanna Parker. They transferred to the steamboat Alexander Scott, arriving in St. Louis in the winter of 1842. James Pickup was a Union Civil War soldier as well as a glass blower later in his life. Both of Rose’s parents were born in England. Kate married her first husband, Joseph N. Van Dyke, on 3 December 1857 in St. Louis, Missouri, and had one son, Joseph Van Dyke. She married James W. Pickup, as her second husband, on 22 February 1863, in St. Louis during the Civil War. This union produced at least five children: Cora A., Justin A., Rose A., Benjamin Alfred, and Raymond Ira. James W. Pickup died on 28 June 1890, at the age of fifty-three, in St. Louis. Kate (Parker) Pickup died on 7 March 1927 in St. Louis, thirty-seven years after the death of her second husband James. Both of them are buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in the family plot. Rose Pickup married Henry Jacob Heine on 2 June 1898 in St. Louis, at the age of eighteen. They were married at the Carondelet Methodist Episcopal Church with Pastor H. G. Mais officiating. This union produced two children: Melvin Benjamin and Rose Adeline. Henry Jacob Heine was born 10 July 1870 in St. Louis, and died at the age of fifty-six on 7 February 1927 in St. Louis. Henry and Rose’s son Melvin was the manager of the purchasing department of Phillips Petroleum Company. Henry and Rose came to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 1906 and established the H. J. Heine Hardware Company. Henry then became a partner in the Heine-Kaiser Decorating Company. Rose was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Eastern Star and the Bethel White Shrine. She died 18 August 1958 in Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma, and is buried at White Rose Cemetery and Mausoleum along with her husband, Henry. Written by Shirley Wadell |
