Ferdinand John Schubert was born on 4 December 1839 in Saxony, Germany. He was the eldest child of Carl (later known as Charles) and Hannah (Zorn?) Schubert. The family, including Ferdinand’s five younger siblings, immigrated to the United States in 1854. They sailed on 15 September 1854 from Bremen on the ship Hansa and arrived in New York on 9 October 1854. On 15 October 1854, they arrived in Wheeling, which was then in the state of Virginia.

The family settled in Marshall County, Virginia, where they farmed but later moved closer to Wheeling. On 22 March 1864, Ferdinand married Christiana Seabright (1842–1897), daughter of Henry and Charlotta Seabright. They had four children, all born in West Virginia: Charles (1867–1935), who married Mary Fischbach; Clara (1870–1928), who married first husband, Henry Paulus, then second husband, Herman Ruecking; Ida (1872–1925), who married John Blauner; and Mollie Emma (1876–1931), who married Ernst A. Weinel.

Ferdinand, Christiana (also known as Christina), and their children moved to the city of St. Louis around 1877–1878. Ferdinand began using the name “John F. Schubert” and worked in a cotton mill. In 1880, the family lived at 1541 Jackson Street in St. Louis, and by 1881, Ferdinand John worked at the Anheuser-Busch brewery.

By the 1890s, John had become a carpenter, and he lived at 4218 Iowa Avenue in St. Louis. His wife Christina died on 3 April 1897. In 1900, John’s daughter Mollie lived with him, and his other children were his neighbors on Iowa Avenue. His daughter, Ida Blauner, and her family lived at 4218A Iowa, his son Charles and his family lived at 4216 Iowa, and his daughter Clara Paulus and her family lived at 4216A Iowa Avenue.

Ferdinand John Schubert died at home on Iowa Avenue on 29 July 1912 and was buried in Old St. Marcus Cemetery in St Louis.
