Altie May (Remington) Kaufer, also called Alice Mary, was born on 21 July 1881, either in Texas or New Mexico. She was the daughter of Charles Remington, a Union Civil War soldier, who served with General Grant, and Mary Murray (Hallem) Remington. Charles and Mary married 16 July 1876 in St. Louis, Missouri, but divorced on 19 May 1892. This union produced two children: Arthur Henry and Altie May. Mrs. Mary Remington died at the age of fifty-eight years old of carcinoma of the face. She had been a piano teacher. Mary is interred in Funk’s Cemetery in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

Altie married Frederick “Fred” Kaufer on 18 July 1900 in St. Louis. Fred was the son of William H. Kaufer and Josephine (Gaebel) Kaufer. Fred and Altie had only one daughter, Altie May, born 2 September 1901 in St. Louis and named after her mother.

On 9 September 1902, Altie (Remington) Kaufer died at the young age of twenty-one years, one month, and nineteen days of typhoid fever, which she’d had for six weeks. Her husband Fred died at age twenty-nine years, nine months, and sixteen days, on 13 July 1905 in St. Louis. Both Altie and her husband Fred are interred in St. Trinity Memorial Cemetery.

Altie’s daughter, Altie May Kaufer, married three times during her lifetime. The first marriage was to Burdette Gorman Loss, on 20 December 1918 in Chicago, ending in divorce. This couple had one son, Wendell Gorman “Ted.” The second marriage was to Wick Carter Stamey on 15 March 1922 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho, and this marriage also ended in divorce. Her third and final marriage was to John Thomas McGarry on 22 August 1956 in Los Angeles, California. He died nineteen years before his wife. Altie McGarry died on 5 December 1983 in Los Angeles.
