Technical/Computer Electronic Mailing List

What is this Tech E-List?

The Technical E-List (formerly the Computer Interest Group’s List) is an easy method of exchanging technical or computer information for the members of this list. Since the disbanding of the Society’s Computer Interest Group, which had the CIG-List, it was decided to continue the mailing list for technical and computer questions. The Tech E-List is open to all who want to join and share information about using technology for genealogy. Maybe you have a question about scanning pictures into your genealogy program, what kind of a computer you should get, how to create a GEDCOM, etc.

What Does the Tech E-List cost?

The StLGS Technical E-List is provided as a free way for its subscribers to exchange technical information.

What Is a Mailing List?

A mailing list is a subscription e-mail service. When one member of the list sends an e-mail, all members receive it automatically. The RootsWeb Internet site hosts this StLGS mailing list.

Ways to Join the List

  1. You can go to the RootsWeb Internet site for the ST-LOUIS-GENEALOGICAL-CIG. This will take you to a page describing how to subscribe, unsubscribe, the two modes, or to contact the administrator. There is a link, that when you click on it, it will generate the e-mail message required to subscribe.
  2. You can send an e-mail to “ST-LOUIS-GENEALOGICAL-CIG-L-request@rootsweb.com” and enter the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in both the Subject and Message parts of the message. You will get a confirmation back from the list server that you have been subscribed. Please remember that if you use multiple e-mail addresses, be sure you are sending this request from the one at which you want to receive all e-mails from the list. The news service uses the sending e-mail address as your subscription address.
The St. Louis Genealogical Society cannot subscribe to the Tech E-List for you.

Modes of Delivery

There are two modes that you can receive your e-mail from the list
  1. “List” mode (CIG-L in the request) – You will receive each e-mail from the other members as they are sent.
  2. “Digest” mode (CIG-D in the request) – All of the e-mails received from the members during the day is sent to you in one e-mail message with the individual mails as attachments. A lot of people will use this mode if the list is very busy.

Sending a Message

Once you are subscribed, to send a message to the other members, just use the following address in the “To:” line of your e-mail program ST-LOUIS-GENEALOGICAL-CIG-L@rootsweb.com (does not have to be in Caps). This will send the e-mail message to the list and all of the members will receive the message, regardless of which mode, “List” or “Digest”, they are using to receive messages. Note: most e-mail lists require you to send your message in “Plain Text” vs. RTF or HTML formats.
