The Jewish Special Interest Group (J-SIG) of St. Louis Genealogical Society began in June 2005 as a revival of the Jewish Genealogical Society of St. Louis, formerly associated with United Hebrew Congregation. In addition to its association with the St. Louis Genealogical Society, the J-SIG is a member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. |

Jewish Resources in St. Louis
There are many resources available in St. Louis for doing Jewish research.
- St. Louis County Library, Special Collections, has a rich collection of Jewish books and periodicals. In addition, their Yizkor book collection is extensive.
- The St. Louis Public Library has a major collection of maps and gazetteers, which are extremely useful for pinpointing pre-World War II shtetls.
- Missouri Historical Society’s Research Library has business records, Jewish newspapers, city directories, and other valuable information.

St. Louis Jewish History
There have been Jewish people in St. Louis since 1807, when merchant, Joseph Philipson from Pennsylvania arrived in the territory and established a general merchandising store. For a complete timeline of Jewish history in St. Louis,

Cemetery Index
Many Jewish cemeteries have come and gone over the years, and Jewish cemetery information is being actively processed for all of the currently active ones. For a list of Jewish cemeteries in St. Louis,

Funeral Homes
Two funeral homes in St. Louis have served the Jewish community in recent years. They are Rindskopf-Roth Funeral Chapel and Berger Memorial. Volunteers have been working with the records of both homes and have partially indexed them. To access names that have been indexed in these funeral homes,

Monument Company
One monument company in St. Louis creates most Jewish tombstones. That company is
Rosenbloom Monument Company, 7511 Olive Street Rd.; St. Louis, MO 63130; 314-721-5070. They do not have a website, but will answer queries in person, by writing, or phone.

Jewish Newsletter
During its existence, the JGS of St. Louis had a monthly newsletter called
Generations. Its first editors were founders, Art and Sylvia Jaffe. Then, for a brief time, it was edited by Gene Schneider, followed by Jerry Goldberg. In late 2000, Ilene Murray began her tenure as editor and remained in that position until the last issue, July 2005.
A complete set of all of the issues is available at St. Louis County Public Library Headquarters in Special Collections and at the Missouri Historical Society Research Library.
