The St. Louis Public Library, founded in 1865, has an old and established genealogical collection. They have over 5000 family histories and an indexed surname heraldry collection. They have a great collection of microfilm and indexes for census, city directories, military records, newspapers, and passenger lists. African American and Native American resources are extensive. This facility houses the German-American Heritage Society collection.

This City Library has a large collection of maps including a complete set of U.S. Geological Survey Topographical maps. The map collection includes many historical, plat, and ward maps.

The library staff is currently indexing obituaries of two local newspapers: the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the St. Louis Argus. Refer to their website for the current years indexed.
