Journal of the Society

The Society publishes a scholarly journal, the Quarterly, four times per year. It includes original articles, book reviews, record transcriptions, queries, and other items of interest. A subscription to the Quarterly is a benefit of membership.

Electronic Delivery

Our Quarterly is now delivered to all new members via e-mail. Members without e-mail service may elect to receive their journal through the postal mail. Members who previously received their journal by postal mail may switch to e-mail delivery at any time. Each quarter, subscribers receive e-mail notification that the current Quarterly is available. Clicking on the Internet link in this e-mail message will open the journal in your browser (Mac) or in Adobe Acrobat Reader (PC). Home subscribers may then either save the journal to their own computers to read at their leisure, view the newsletter online, or print a copy to their local printer.

To change your postal mail subscription to e-mail service, simply:

1. Be a member of the Society (click here to join).
2. Be logged in as a member to this website (click on the “Log In” icon near the top of the home page).
3. Click on this Electronic Quarterly link.

Advantages of receiving your Quarterly electronically include:

• More timely delivery. No more postal service delays! And it will always arrive in perfect condition (no torn corners).
• View the journal in color. Often, illustrations are captured in color, but our print journal is in black and white only.
• All Internet links are live. Clicking on a link automatically takes you to that page.
• Past issues can be saved on your home computer for later reference, electronically.
• Individual articles or pages can be printed.

If you have missed an issue or need to get another copy, members can access the past four issues online. These are always available via a link from the home page OR you can click here for past issues of the Quarterly (if you are logged in as a member).

Manuscripts

We encourage article submissions from our members. The StLGS Quarterly editor will consider publishing any submission that has merit to genealogical research with an emphasis on the St. Louis area. This may include, but is not limited to:

• Reference articles
• How-to articles
• Travel articles
• Personal recollections, such as diaries or memoirs
• Genealogies of families related to the St. Louis area
• Pictorial presentations
• Technology and how it relates to genealogy

Electronic submission is preferred. Text should follow The Chicago Manual of Style, latest edition. Endnotes should follow Elizabeth Shown Mills, Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1997). Please refer to the "Guidelines for Publication" for more information about the types of articles accepted and their preferred formats. We recommend reviewing previous issues of the Quarterly for a sense of the kinds of articles that will be of interest to our readers.

Queries

Members may submit one query of up to 50 words per year, based on the date of publication, at no charge. They may submit additional queries or queries of more than 50 words by paying $3.00. Non-members may submit a query for $3.00 for up to 50 words.

Index

An index to the Quarterly is published in the winter issue each year. In addition, three ten-year indexes in book form are also available for purchase from the Society:

• Vol. 1 1968–1977
• Vol. 2 1978–1987
• Vol. 3 1988–1997

The index to 1998–2007 is on CD. The society is now selling two CDs of the Quarterly complete with indexes. Each CD spans twenty years, works with both Macs and PCs, and is fully searchable. The actual back issues of the Quarterly are also on the CDs as PDFs. The CDs are available from the Online Store.

Back Issues

Single back issues of the Quarterly are available as electronic files (PDFs) and can be sent as e-mails upon request. A limited number of printed issues of the Quarterly are kept at the office and may be purchased for $5.00 each (which includes postage and handling).
