In the 1800s, two religious denominations used Evangelical in their name and they are often confused.
In the 1830s, the early wave of Germans brought the Evangelical & Reformed Church to St. Louis. Holy Ghost Evangelical was the first church of this religion. Others soon followed including St. John’s Evangelical in Mehlville. Churches of this denomination eventually became the United Church of Christ. These churches are listed under UCC.
The Germans also brought the Evangelical Lutheran church to St. Louis in the 1830s. Trinity Lutheran Church was the first of this denomination in the area. These churches are listed under Lutheran.
