Harper, Ben, Hon. 4 Apr 1887 Rock Island, Illinois. Hon. Ben Harper died at his residence in Rock Island at 5:30 this evening, in his 71st year. He was born in Philadelphia, and in 1850 settled in Rock Island, where he has since been one of the most prominent citizens. For several years he was engaged in mercantile pursuits which proved financial successes. He was President of the Board of Education for several years and Mayor of the city. In 1870 he built the Harper House at a cost of $100,000 and gave it his personal attention until within a few months. He was the owner of the Opera House, and had been the moving spirit in nearly all the city's public enterprises for thirty years. For the last year his health had been feeble.
